1.ADVANCE, ADVANCEMENT Advance и advancement взаимозаменяются в метафорическом значении 'прогресс, успех, продвижение': industrial advance (advancement), advance (advancement) of knowledge. Advance и advancement, развившиеся соответственно из непереходного и переходного значений глагола advance 'продвигаться – продвигать', 'развиваться – развивать', сохраняют разницу в оттенках значения; так, advance of science имеет в виду развитие науки как таковое, advancement of science обращает внимание на действия, предпринимаемые для того, чтобы наука развивалась. Кроме того, advancement часто употребляется в значении 'продвижение по службе': advancement in one's career, advancement in rank. В буквальном значении 'пространственное продвижение вперед, наступление' употребляется только advance: advance of a battleline, advance of soldiers towards a town. 2. ADVANCE TOWARDS (TO), AGAINST, ON, IN Advance towards (to) означает 'продвигаться, приближаться, подходить к чему-л,': to advance towards (to) a city, to advance towards one's place of destination. Advance against и advance on могут означать 'наступать, атаковать': to advance against (on) a city. Advance against может также употребляться в значении 'продвигаться вперед, преодолевая какое-л. сопротивление' (сопротивление ветра, течения и т. д.): to advance against the wind, to advance against a current. Advance in употребляется в метафорическом значении 'продвигаться вперед, делать успехи в чем-л.': to advance in one's work.Difficulties of the English language (lexical reference) English-Russian dictionary > advance

- come at- come by- come in- come of- come off- come on- come out- come to- come upCOME, GO Although c ome and venir usually imply motion towards the speaker while go and ir imply motion away from them, there are some differences between the two languages. In English we sometimes describe movement as if from the other person's perspective. In Spanish, this is not the case. ► For example when someone calls you:
I'm coming Ya voy ► Making arrangements over the phone or in a letter:
I'll come and pick you up at four Iré a recogerte a las cuatro
Can I come too? ¿Puedo ir yo también?
Shall I come with you? ¿Voy contigo? ► So, use ir rather than venir when going towards someone else or when joining them to go on somewhere else. ► Compare:
Are you coming with us? (viewed from the speaker's perspective) ¿(Te) vienes con nosotros? For further uses and examples, see come, go* * *[kʌm]
